Skyrim is known as the Fatherland or Old Kingdom since it was the first region to be settled my Man. It was settled by the Atmorans who called it Mereth due to the vast numbers of Mer living there. Ysgramor landed at Hsaarik Head which is the northern tip of Skyrim. It's noted that Ysgramor and his men were fleeing from a Civil War that engulfed Atmora which at that time had a sizeable population.
Ysgramor and the Snow Elves for a long while were relitvely peaceful with each other. However, Snow Elves noticed through the Nords shorter lifespans, fast rates of physical maturation, and birth rates that they would be overwhelmed if they left it unchecked. Snow Elves had no remission as they razed the city of Saarthal which eventually became the Night of Tears. Miraculously only Ysgramor and his two sons were able to escape back to Atmora. He returned to Atmora seeing the tenuous peace that had formed between factions. He recognized that he could turn their plight into uniting a force for the Human race. Ysgramor returned to skyrim with an army called the Five Hundred Companions which composed heros of the Atmoran Civil War. With little resistance from the Snow Elves Ysgramor and his Five Hundred Companions drove them out, and after they were knighted in to what would become the First Empire.
